ADK Cycle Outing

Enjoy road biking in the North Country—travel the routes in the recent guide “Cycling Routes of the Saint Lawrence River Valley and Northern Adirondacks” by Tom Ortmeyer and John Barron.  Each route has a description, map, gps coordinates, and cue sheet.

Multiple trips will be offered every day.  Trips are led by cycle outing participants, outing leaders, and guest leaders, and vary in length and difficulty.  You can select the trip that meets your interest and skill level.  Cue sheets will be available for each rider for all pre-published routes.

The rides focus on the Saint Lawrence River Valley and the rivers that flow from the Adirondacks to the St. Lawrence River.  Multiple rides are offered each day, with average speeds of 9, 12, an 16 mph typical for the different groups.  Trip distances typically range from around 20 miles to 50 or more.  Some trips will focus strictly on cycling, while others rides have the potential for spending time relaxing and sightseeing in addition to riding.  Many rides focus on the quiet town roads in lightly populated areas, with some portions on the broad paved shoulders of main highways.  Several rides are across the river in southeastern Ontario and western Quebec.  (Passport or enhanced license required).

The bicycle outing takes place in June, and is based in Moore House dormitory on the Clarkson University campus in Potsdam, NY.  Trips depart from campus each morning, some directly from campus and others requiring a drive to the departure point.

Following each day’s trip, return to your room and enjoy a hot shower (bathroom in every room with stand up shower, laundry facilities available on campus) and a snooze if desired.   We gather in the lounge in late afternoon, to socialize, and then discuss the day’s rides, and plan trip for the next day.

Meals are on your own.  There is a kitchenette for group use in Moore House, with refrigerator, stove, oven and microwave.  There will be a limited supply of pots and pans.  If you plan to regularly use the kitchenette, it is best to bring your own plates and tableware, and perhaps a favorite pot or pan.  There will be a coffee maker and toaster, and coffee will be furnished each morning.

There are  plenty of places to eat nearby.  Some rides will include plans for breakfast or lunch en route.  Make plans for dinner with new friends at an area restaurant a number of which include outdoor dining opportunities.  And follow this enjoying some of the summer evening activities the area is known for.  Or simply kick back and relax.

Participants are responsible for providing bicycles, helmets (helmets are required on all rides) and transportation of the bikes, lunch or dinner.  The base outing price does not include linens.  Linens are available for an additional price of $25 for Options 1 and 2, and $50 for Option 3.  The linens included when this is selected are sheets (fitted extra length twin bottom, flat twin top sheet), pillows, blankets, towels, washcloths, shampoo, conditioner, lotion.
